What Would David Do?

Introduction

A few years ago, a friend of mine explained to me that in his opinion, we worship God for who He is, and not for what He has done. While I valued his opinion, that wasn't enough. The real question is, what is worship from God's point of view? Are there some types of worship that are more acceptable to Him than others? Is it enough simply that we are sincere?

The only place to find the answers to those questions is in the Word of God. And so that is where I went. At first, I intended to study what the entire Bible had to say about worship. Unfortunately, my goals were set a little too high! So I began to focus on the book of Psalms. My method was fairly simple. I looked at one verse at a time to determine what it was about. Then I used this as a category, and went on to the next verse. If that verse fit into a category that was already defined, I would mark it down. If the verse didn't fit into an existing category, I tried to determine what it was about, and create another category.

We'll be looking at what David and the other Psalmists worshiped God for (both Who He is and What He Has Done... and more), what things they mentioned most in worship, and how important worship is. We'll look at the role of emotions, praise, thanksgiving, music, and other items mentioned in the Word of God.

And we'll try to let our conclusions come from the Word of God. If worship is really important, then God will have spoken clearly on it.
